More about our Worship

Sunday Service 2014The main service each week takes place on Sundays at 5.30pm. Usually the form of service is a Sung Eucharist. A Sung Eucharist is also known as Holy Communion, the Lord's Supper or the Mass. It is service of Word and Sacrament, rooted in Scripture. There are three Biblical readings and as a community, we pray for the needs of the world. We also offer to God Bread and Wine, acting in faithfulness to Jesus' command to ‘do this' and in thanksgiving for all his goodness, and in which Christ makes himself known to us in the sharing of the sacrament of Holy Communion (e.g. Luke 22.14-19; 24.13-35). All baptised people or those who have communicant status in their own denomination are always welcome to receive Holy Communion.

Evensong 2014This service includes a sermon, in which the meaning of the Good News of Christ is shared and explored, and visiting preachers represent an ecumenical range of Christian denominations and theological traditions. Music also plays a large part in our Sunday worship, drawing on the richness of sacred music from across the centuries and sung by our own Chapel Choir.

A multitude of opportunities for worship are also offered each week of Full Term.  The Daily Offices of Morning and Evening Prayer are short services with readings from scripture and time for prayer each morning and evening.  For these services we gather in the side Chapel (the small chapel inside and at the front of Keble Chapel).Keble Side Chapel

Morning Prayer is offered every weekday at 8.15am and all are welcome to join us for breakfast in Hall afterwards.  This service ends in time for you to eat breakfast and make it to a 9:00am lecture.

Evening Prayer is offered on many evenings at 6.30pm.  This service finishes in time for you to make it to the Hall for dinner at 7.00pm.

On Tuesdays and Thursday nights, and occasionally other evenings as posted, a small service of Holy Communion is offered without music or preaching.  This service takes place at 6.30pm (in the place of Evening Prayer) and finishes in time for dinner in Hall.

Evensong is a special service offered each Wednesday night at 6.00pm.  This service, sung by the choir and at times featuring a short sermon by a Keble student, has a Psalm, two Scripture readings, and two ‘canticles' (or ‘songs') taken from the Gospel of Luke known as the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis (see Luke 1.46-55 and 2.29-32). Prayers are offered, as well.

Compline is offered each Thursday night during term at 9.00pm, sung by the Chapel Choir.  A description of Compline is available on a separate Compline Page also found in the navigation to the left.

Other special services during term, as well as details of each week's offerings, may be found on our Term Card.  Everyone is welcome to every service in Keble Chapel. There is no ‘test' to enter the Chapel - her doors are open to all.
