Identifying networks with common organizational principles

Dr. Wegner is based at Department of Statistical Science at University College London and has published a number of articles on networks comparison together with Prof. Gesine Reinert. He will be talking about their most recent article on a simple methodology to compare complex systems.

Gibbs Room, Keble College.

All are welcome.

'Many complex systems can be represented as networks, and the problem of network comparison is becoming increasingly relevant. There are many techniques for comparing networks, from simply comparing network summary statistics to sophisticated but computationally costly alignment-based approaches.  Yet it still remains challenging to cluster correctly networks that are of a different size and density, but are hypothesized to be structurally similar. In this talk, I will present a new network comparison methodology, called NetEmd, whose aim is to identify networks with common organizational structures by comparing distributions of local network features. The methodology is simple, intuitive and applicable in a wide variety of settings ranging from the functional classification of proteins to tracking the evolution of the Internet.'
