Keble Today

An overview of the composition and activities of the College, focussing on developments over past five years

Who we are

Keble at present has 435 undergraduate students and 226 graduate students. There are 43 Fellows who are members of its Governing Body, and they cover a huge variety of disciplines from Aegean Archaeology to Internet Governance. There are another 14 Research Fellows, and an essential supporting team of research-active College Lecturers. We pride ourselves on our traditions, but we also like to think of ourselves as a force for constructive change in the University: for example we have been keen supporters of radical rethinks on critical issues such as admissions policy.

Where we are going

Keble is not one of the better endowed Colleges of the University, but we have adopted an imaginative response to fund raising and income generation through conferences, and this has helped us both in promoting our teaching and research profile, while at the same time improving the amenties and facilities available to our students.

Teaching and research

  • Commitment to developments at the cutting edge of e-science and the social and legal dimensions of the internet through recent key academic appointments.
  • Close involvement with the Oxford Martin School, founded by the vision of a Keble alumnus, and innovative funding provided through two others, David Norwood for Chemistry and George Robinson for Biomedical Engineering.
  • Expansion of research fellow programmes.
  • Greater investment in teaching in Theology and Archaeology and Anthropology.

Students

We are immensely proud of the academic achievements of our students, but we are also committed to their wider development. The provision of new facilities has encouraged an efflorescence of College drama and music; our choir, riding the crest of the wave of its earlier CD successes, has recently emerged from a successful United States Tour.

Amenities and facilities

  • Acquisition of the 1.7 acre Acland Hospital site within a few hundred yards of the main site; our graduate population is now concentrated here, and there is potential for an exciting expansion of accommodation and research facilities on the site.
  • Provision of new public spaces in the Sloane Robinson Building designed by Rick Mather, including a state of the art theatre, music room, and a function room which operates as a café in term time.
  • Relocation of the Middle Common Room for graduates with much more social space and enhanced facilities.
  • Cleaning of the Dining Hall ceiling to reveal its Victorian splendour.
  • The relandscaping of the College grounds.
  • The opening of what we like to think of as ‘the best little gym in Oxford’.
  • Refurbishment of the College Bar with greatly increased circulation space.

Old Members

Former students of Keble form an important and active part of the College community. The Alumni & Development Office enables Old Members to keep in touch with each other and engage with the College through a programme of events and networking opportunities. Old Members also provide vital financial support for Keble students and enable College to achieve its current and future aims through the Talbot Fund and Vision for 2020 Campaign. Please visit the Alumni pages to find out more.

Honorary Fellows

The Governing Body can elect distinguished persons to Honorary Fellowships of the College.  Honorary Fellows can be Old Members, Fellows, and Wardens, as well as persons with no previous academic connection to the college who the Governing Body chooses to honour.  Honorary Fellows have included Lord Andrew Adonis, The Right Hon Ed Balls MP, John Betjeman, Imrah Khan and former US President Ronald Reagan.  You can find a full list of our current Honorary Fellows here

Conferences

Keble has established itself as one of the leading conference venues in Oxford. High quality accommodation, a great variety of meeting and social spaces are essential to this success. Conference revenue underpins the continuing academic activity of the College.
