Access to Keble College Archives

Admission guidelines and opening hours

Admission and opening hours

The primary function of the Archive is to serve the needs of the College and its members and to preserve the recorded heritage of the College. This takes priority over all other uses, including enquiries and access.

Current members of College are encouraged to make use of the Archives for their research and study, whether academic or on behalf of a College group, society or sports team.

College staff are permitted to access archival material with the supervision of the Archivist or, should the Archivist be unavailable, the senior Library staff.

Whilst Keble College does allow access to the Archives there is however no automatic right of entry for members of the public. In some cases, archival material may be made available for the purposes of research. The Archives Reading Room is open for pre-arranged appointments on Mondays, Fridays and Tuesday mornings.  You must write or e-mail at least one month in advance of your visit in order to arrange a time and date and to confirm that the College has the document in which you are interested. We regret that it is not usually possible to accommodate enquirers who arrive without an appointment

Access to the Archives Reading Room

Access to the Reading Room can only be gained by stairs. Please contact the Archivist prior to your visit if you have any queries about accessibility.

Access to documents

Access to archival material is in accordance with relevant legislation. The Archive operates a closure period for personal or sensitive information pertaining to individuals. The closure period is until the death (if known) of the individual, or (if not known) 100 years from their date of birth. In the case of enquiries involving sensitive or potentially damaging information the Archivist reserves the right to refuse access.

Access to the archives will only be allowed after reading and signing the ‘Conditions of Access’, which will be issued to you by the Archivist when arranging to visit.

Contacting the Archivist

If you have any enquiries about the material held in the Keble College Archives please contact the Archivist at or 01865 272728.

Current members may feel free to visit the Archivist in person for a chat about their research and how the Archives may be of benefit to them; she can be found in the Library, downstairs in the office.
