Duncan Watts at Keble

Monday 14 May 2007

The guest speaker at the latest event held by the Keble Social Sciences Research Group on 26th April was Duncan Watts of Columbia University, the author of Six Degrees: The Science of a Connected Age (Norton, 2003) and frequent contributor to newspapers and magazines in the US and UK. He spoke on the small world phenomenon - the idea that that everyone in the world can be reached through a short chain of social acquaintances. In a wide ranging questions and answer session students and academics in all branches of social sciences at Keble learned why so many social (and non-social) networks share this almost universal characteristic and the issues that arise in measuring and modelling connectedness.
