English Fellow Erica McAlpine publishes collection of poems

Thursday 12 May 2016

Dr Erica McAlpine, Robin Geffen Career Development Fellow in English, has published her first collection of original poetry, The Country Gambler, available from Shearsman Books. Poet Maureen McLane comments, "A powerful intelligence animates these poems, an unusual sensitivity and grace."

Dr McAlpine is a specialist in twentieth-century poetry, and lyric theory from Romanticism to the present day. She has previous degrees from Cambridge and Harvard.  She writes of her collection, "It's a short book of lyric poems about life, love, animals, plants -- the sorts of things you might encounter any day. Within the book, my own poems are in conversation with translations of odes by the Roman poet Horace, whose lessons about life and poetry I've been trying to heed for years!"
