Serguei Saavedra featured in the prestigious journal Science.

Tuesday 12 December 2006

Serguei's background is in industrial engineering, and he came to Oxford from Mexico in April 2005.  He is supported by a research studentship from the European project that Dr Reed-Tsochas is coordinating (see MMCOMNET Project Sum).  There were in excess of 20 applications for the studentship, and Serguei clearly distinguished himself from the other six shortlisted candidates. He already has an article accepted by Physica A, and the work discussed in the Science news article will shortly be submitted to Science as a research article for which Serguei will be the first author. This is highly unusual for a D Phil student still only in his second year, and his supervisor writes that it was Serguei’s conference presentation at the European Conference on Complex Systems held in Oxford at the end of September that sparked off the news article. Serguei also finds time to contribute to the student Mexican Society, with which Keble has had a close connection through other Mexican graduate students. Several Keble fellows are concerned in their work with research on complex systems, including Professor Gesine Reinert, Fellow in Statistics.
