Mr Simon Whalley

Fellow by Special Election

Thank you for coming to this homepage. There is a great deal of music happening at Keble: with the exciting new facilities and the launch of College Instrumental Scholarships this is an exciting period for music at the college.

Research Interests

My chief interests in music history are opera and music theatre. I have written on Britten's Church Parables and the late operas as well as the composer's relationship with religion and religious texts. I have also written a number of cd reviews in various publications. Chamber music and lieder are also of great interest to me, both as teacher and performer. Alongside my teaching I also compose and perform. I have written much choral and vocal music. Recent performances include a set of children's songs for Cothill House School, and an orchestral overture; future projects include 'Christus', a series of four cantatas based on the Passion story as recounted by St Mark. These will be performed in Queens College Chapel, Oxford on successive Tuesdays in Lent 2010 (9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th).
