Professor Harry L. Anderson

Welcome

I am the Tutorial Fellow in Organic Chemistry at Keble. If you would like to find out more about my research interests, please visit my departmental website.

Research Interests

  • Synthesis and supramolecular chemistry of large conjugated π-systems
  • Conjugated polymers and oligomers; organic semiconductors
  • Molecular wires and charge-transport through single molecules
  • Dyes for two-photon absorption and second harmonic generation
  • Molecular recognition, self-assembly, cooperativity and template-directed synthesis
  • Photobiology, photodynamic therapy and optical probes for living systems
  • Porphyrin and rotaxane chemistry

Most of my work concerns the use of synthesis and supramolecular assembly to explore structure-property relationships, for the creation of functional molecular materials.  I enjoy collaborating with physicists, engineers and physiologists to understand the interplay between electronic delocalization, molecular architecture and function.  I like making things; if I were not a scientist, I would probably have become a craftsman or an inventor.

Academic Biography

  • Lecturer at Oxford (1994 - present)
  • Work in Zürich and Cambridge. (1990 - 1994)
