November London Lecture

Thursday 09 November 2017 from 6:00 PM

Putin's New Russia and the Ghosts of the Past

by Shaun Walker (2000), Moscow Correspondent for the Guardian

The lecture will place Putin in the longer arc of Russian history, looking at the vacuum of ideas and purpose caused by the Soviet collapse. It will look at how Putin used history to create a sense of nation and patriotism in Russia, and how this has led to today's more assertive Russia, the annexation of Crimea and accusations of meddling in the affairs of Western nations.

Shaun Walker read History at Keble from 2000-2003, and has worked as a journalist in Moscow for more than a decade. His book, The Long Hangover: Putin's New Russia and the Ghosts of the Past will be published by Oxford University Press in February 2018.
