Shaun Walker, currently Guardian correspondent for central and eastern Europe, will be talking on the subject ‘The Illegals – the century-long history of Russia’s deepest spies’. The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception, ending at 7 pm. No registration required, and all welcome.
Shaun, who read History at Keble, was previously Guardian correspondent in Moscow and covered the early stages of the war in Ukraine. His previous books include The Long Hangover: Putin’s New Russia and the Ghosts of the Past (2018), which looked at Putin’s project through the lens of the use of history. His forthcoming talk will focus on his recent publication, The Illegals: Russia’s Most Audacious Spies and the Plot to Infiltrate the West (2025).
Hosted by Dr Ian Archer, Robert Stonehouse Tutorial Fellow in History.
