Paul Newman, Keble Fellow and BP Professor of Information Engineering at the Department of Engineering Science, has been awarded a Silver Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of his innovations in navigation and autonomous vehicles.

Professor Newman is Director of the Oxford Robotics Institute, and Founder of Oxbotica, and is a leading authority in mobile robot autonomy, navigation, mapping, scene understanding and perception. He has received particular attention for his development of the ‘Robotcar’ in 2013, the first autonomous vehicle on UK roads. Professor Newman’s work underpins the government’s strategy on driverless cars, and he currently serves on the Department for Transport’s Science Advisory Council.

The award was presented on Thursday 11 July at the annual Royal Academy of Engineering Awards Dinner, which celebrates achievement by exceptional engineers at every stage of their career, with a focus on those delivering societal benefit.
