Dr. David Messner-Kreuzbauer is a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute for European Tort Law (ETL) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Graz.

During his visiting fellowship at Keble College he is working on a book about uncertainty in private law, which seeks to offer a broad perspective on tort, contract and evidence law in the English, French and Germanic legal systems.

He studied law at the University of Vienna from 2011-2021 (Mag. iur. 2015, Dr. iur. 2021). Starting as a research assistant at ETL in 2015, he returned there as a postdoctoral researcher in 2022 after a position at the University of Graz in 2019-2022. Besides more classic legal analyses, David’s work compares legal systems to learn which of their features have a functional or cultural meaning, and which features might just be accidental developments worth rethinking.
